Matthew - From Tax Collector to Testament

This is a first-person account from Matthew, also known as Levi, who left his tax booth to follow Jesus. As both a former tax collector and the author of the first Gospel, his unique perspective bridges cultural divides and demonstrates the power of divine redemption.

I am Matthew, though I was once known as Levi. My story is one of transformation – from a despised tax collector to a follower of Christ, from someone who collected debts to one who records grace. When people look at me with suspicion because of my past, I simply smile, knowing that my life stands as a testament to the power of Jesus to transform even those society deems unredeemable.

The Call That Changed Everything

I can still picture that day with perfect clarity – I was sitting at my tax booth in Capernaum, surrounded by my accounting scrolls and money boxes. It was a position that had brought me wealth but cost me the respect of my own people. Then Jesus passed by, looked directly at me, and said two words that would change everything: "Follow me."

To the surprise of many (and perhaps even myself), I left everything immediately. The ledgers, the money, the security – all of it stayed at that booth as I rose to follow Him. Some might call it impulsive, but I, who had spent years calculating risks and profits, had finally found something of infinite worth.

A Feast of Grace

My first act as a follower of Jesus was to host a great feast, inviting my fellow tax collectors and others whom religious society labeled as "sinners." I wanted them to meet the One who had seen past my profession to my person, past my sins to my soul. As we reclined at the table, I watched Jesus interact with my guests with the same acceptance He had shown me, and I began to understand that His kingdom operated on a different ledger system altogether.

From Numbers to Narratives

My skills as a tax collector – attention to detail, fluency in multiple languages, understanding of both Jewish and Roman systems – found new purpose in documenting Jesus's ministry. As someone accustomed to keeping meticulous records, I began to document everything:

  • His teachings that fulfilled ancient prophecies
  • The genealogy that proved His royal lineage
  • The sermons that transformed lives
  • The miracles that demonstrated His authority
  • The parables that revealed kingdom truths

Bridging Worlds

My unique position between cultures – working for Rome but being Jewish by birth – gave me a perspective that proved valuable in sharing Jesus's message. I understood:

  • How to communicate across cultural barriers
  • The tension between religious and secular authority
  • The struggles of those caught between worlds
  • The power of Jesus's message to transcend divisions

The Kingdom's New Economy

As someone who once measured everything in monetary value, I discovered a new economy in Christ's kingdom:

  • Where the poor in spirit receive the richest inheritance
  • Where losing your life yields the greatest profit
  • Where the last become first
  • Where giving away brings greater returns than collecting

A Message for Today's Seekers

To those reading these words who feel disqualified by their past or their profession, know this: Jesus doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Whether you're in a profession others judge, struggling with ethical decisions, or feeling like an outsider to faith, remember that my tax booth became a testimony.

Matthew the Apostle

In my years of following Jesus, I've learned that no one is beyond His call, no past is beyond His redemption, and no skill is beyond His ability to repurpose for His kingdom. The precision I once used to track taxes now serves to record testimony. The languages I used for commerce now communicate Christ. The understanding of systems and cultures I developed has helped bridge gaps between people and the Gospel.

Remember, your current position – whatever it may be – could be the very platform God uses to demonstrate His transforming power. As one who went from collecting temporal taxes to recording eternal truths, I can testify that when Jesus calls, answering that call leads to purposes greater than we could imagine. In His kingdom's ledger, grace always exceeds our debts, and His love transforms our greatest liabilities into assets for His glory.
